An essay, generally, is an academic piece of work that presents the argument of the author. This is a very vague definition, but it pretty much hits the nail on the head as to what any HSC essay is for. You are presenting your argument. This could take the form of analysis of a text for English, personal opinion on a contemporary legal issue for Legal Studies. All slightly different, but the same in that it is your thoughts on paper.
Your Thesis paragraph is first. The first question to ask (and I asked a LOT before I finally understood) is, what is a Thesis? Put simply, a Thesis is a statement, a premise, an opinion, etc., put forward to the reader to be proved. For example, a Thesis statement from Legal Studies:
Essay writing is the most important skill you need to develop in your HSC year. Success in HSC English will depend on your ability to write convincing, powerful essays that convey your understanding of both the Area of Study and Modules units. It’s understandably daunting to think that so much of your mark revolves around one skill but fortunately, with a bit of direction and structure, a Band 6 essay is achievable.
Marking guidelines are developed by the examination committee, and are used at the marking centre in marking student responses. For each question, the marking guidelines are contained in a table showing the criteria associated with each mark or mark range.
Why do I need to know how to write an HSC essay? Well, it is impossible to go through Year 66 and 67 without writing one. In fact, it is pretty much impossible to go through without writing at least four of them! I personally had to write 8 of them across my subjects, and I was math/science oriented. If you are HSIE focused – Well, you would know all too well that essays can be nasty.
You should aim for 8 body paragraphs. 8 is generally how many are required to get a good level of detail and explanation.
Each body paragraph must deal with a particular theme or text, and must start with a topic sentence. A topic sentence, similar to a thesis statement, will tell the reader what you plan on discussing. From there, you must justify your statements with evidence. A basic tool you can use is the . system – highlight a technique, identify an example and explain the effect – the effect will relate to your topic sentence, which in turn relates to your thesis! The conclusion of a body paragraph must sum up your argument for the paragraph and relate it to the thesis once again.
This means organising your ideas into themes. Usually, in Crime, you should be tackling 8-5 of these 8775 themes 8776 .
